Every Saturday, I like to share a song on my social media channels as part of my ‘Saturday Song’ theme. This week, I’ve chosen ‘Boom Boom’ by Nazia Hasan, a legendary Pakistani singer who left an indelible mark on the music industry. This song played frequently on my Tape Recorder (That I assembled myself) as I slogged out my B.Sc Examination preparation night outs. As we celebrate her music and remember her legacy, let’s take a moment to appreciate the power of music to unite people and bring joy to our lives.
Nazia Hasan was a songwriter, and lawyer. Born in Karachi on April 3, 1965, she became an icon in the music industry in the early 1980s and was one of the first South Asian female singers to achieve success in the international music scene. Her song “Aap Jaisa Koi” from the Bollywood movie Qurbani became an instant hit and she won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1981.
Nazia’s music was unique, blending Eastern and Western influences to create a sound that was both catchy and melodious. Her songs were popular not just in Pakistan and India, but also in other countries like the UK and the Middle East. In fact, her album Disco Deewane, released in 1981, became the best-selling album in the history of Pakistani music and established her as a household name.
One of Nazia’s most popular songs is “Boom Boom,” which was released in 1982 and became an instant hit. The song was written by Nazia’s brother, Zoheb Hasan, and was produced by Indian music director Biddu. “Boom Boom” was a chartbuster and was played at parties and discos all over the world. The song’s catchy beat and Nazia’s unique voice made it a favorite among music lovers.
However, Nazia’s success was short-lived. In 1991, at the age of 35, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She fought the disease with great courage and continued to work on music projects even while undergoing treatment. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she passed away on August 13, 2000, in London.
Nazia’s untimely death was a great loss to the music industry and to her fans all over the world. She was a trailblazer who broke down barriers and paved the way for other female singers to follow. Her music continues to inspire people today, and her legacy lives on through her songs. She will always be remembered as a talented and courageous artist who left an indelible mark on the world of music.
In conclusion, “Boom Boom” is not just a song, but a testament to the talent and creativity of Nazia Hasan. Her unique style and sound were ahead of their time and continue to inspire new generations of musicians. Her tragic end reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Let us honor her memory by continuing to enjoy and appreciate her music.
