Find Out Who You Are… (Branding Yourself)

So what does Finding out “who you are” has to do with branding yourself or your business?

The essence is to find a connection between you and your product or services. (More on that later) For now, let’s concentrate on finding out “who you are”.

There are various ways to approach this and most likely you are already onto this journey. This subject is deep and has tendency to get complicated…its like a “Pandora box”. This is my attempt to oversimplify this…lets see how far we can go.

In a way, It’s good until its closed as you don’t know what is inside and some really don’t care…why? While others like you and me write and read about it, find it interesting and want to know more…

God, No God: What’s your pick?

Unlike what we would like to believe this world has two major belief systems. One believes in god or something supernatural that’s behind the creation of this world. The other one is more material and explains the creation with a series of events in the galaxy to the formation of earth.

I am not here to judge you based on what your pick or tell you which is better. But both belief systems have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The God system makes you comfortable with the idea that you are created with a grandiose plan but you may or may not find the purpose of life…based on decisions you make living it.

While the no god system makes you comfortable with whatever you are doing, it helps you understand the world from the perspective of the natural choices you need to make in everyday life.

Off-course you can not just put the whole population of the world into these two buckets. There are variations and mixes.

  • This world is created by God (refer your holy book for more details)
  • This world is created by something supernatural but not necessarily god. (Alien, Super advanced humans… you fill in the blanks)
  • This world is an existence of “chance” we can explain everything.

OK fine… so somebody created this world or a big bang. But the question is- what are you supposed to do here? Are you just supposed to fulfill the “karma”? (Get on with your life nice and easy) or you can decide what you will do exactly here…or how it will impact others? Can you pick your cause? can you live your own life? Can you really find a purpose?

Why do some people do more in a lifetime than everyone put together? If I can do whatever I want what is stopping me. What will I do if I get to do it? Or is there really a need to do anything different?

The consumer and a Producer.

Consumption is good for the economy going purely by math more the people buy better the economy gets. This means more and more people should be churned out “indoctrinated” so they continuously buy and consume without any guilt. You have a massive PR machine that works overtime to ensure you fit in this bill.

But say you step up and say you want to do something of your own and a hell will break loose. Doing something on your own is a violation of accepted norms. Interestingly no school or college teaches you: How to find “who you are” or become a success with whatever you want to do.

The Easy Way Out? Start with:

  • What do you do? (What are you good at…)
  • What have you done? (How did your journey go so far…what did you find?)
  • What do you want to do? (Where do you want to go from here?)

See if you can write this down on a piece of paper and keep it handy. More on this and how it will help branding yourself or your business next week. (Watch out for this space)

Till then tchau!
